Our final baby of the 2024 season is Orchard, the Our final baby of the 2024 season is Orchard, the ring-tailed lemur. Orchard was born on May 3, 2024 and loves spending her time playing with sister Natty and her Collared lemur friends Chandler, Percival, and Bernadette! Orchard is a sweet little lady who quickly grabs the attention whoever may be nearby! Daughter to mom Dalia and dad Goose, Orchard is well cared for and looked after!
Next up, we would like to introduce you to twin Re Next up, we would like to introduce you to twin Red Ruffed Lemurs, Furry and Fuzzy! Furry and Fuzzy are named after a book about twin red ruffed lemurs in our Ako book series! They were born on April 20, 2024. Furry is a fun-loving boy, and Fuzzy is a sassy little girl. Both have quickly weaseled their way into staff's hearts and give their family group a run for their money! Furry and Fuzzy are children of mom Zazabe and dad Ranomamy. They also live with their siblings Onilahy, Atody, and Mangoky. There's never a dull moment with this group!!

In the last week we celebrated the birthdays of Collared lemurs Jolene, Percival, and Bernadette, Mongoose lemur Leena, and Red Ruffed lemur Atody! They all got personalized, painted cardboard boxes and plenty of snacks to celebrate with their families! We love celebrating a birthday! Was your birthday in the last week? How did you celebrate?
We are deeply saddened to announce the recent pass We are deeply saddened to announce the recent passing of Mongoose Lemur (Eulemur mongoz), Clarissa.Clarissa came to LCF in 2011 from the Sacramento Zoo and was force to be reckoned with from day 1! She always had a big, endearing personality and became a staple here at LCF. She was quickly loved by keeper and intern staff as well as her various boyfriends through the years. Back in November, Clarissa was diagnosed with liver cancer and staff worked incredibly hard to keep her comfortable and happy as treatment was not a viable option for Clarissa, being a 30 year old Mongoose lemur. This is far past the life expectancy of mongoose lemurs in the wild and in human care. Clarissa recently had a rapid decline in her health and the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize her.We are grateful for the many years we were able to care for Clarissa and for experiencing the fiery spirit with which she approached her daily life . She will be deeply missed.
Today we celebrate the 10th birthday of the one an Today we celebrate the 10th birthday of the one and only Goose! If you have followed LCF for awhile, you know Goose. At just 10 weeks of age, Goose was attacked by an aerial predator and suffered an injury that caused paralysis in his left leg. After month of treatments and long discussions with veterinary professionals, it was determined to amputate Goose's leg. Now, 10 years later, Goose is living a fulfilling, normal life for a Ring-tailed lemur and has sired 3 daughters! Goose has overcome all the odds against him and we could not be happier to celebrate him today!
We would like to wish a very Happy 11th Birthday t We would like to wish a very Happy 11th Birthday to our newest lemur resident, Flo! Flo is a collared lemur that came to LCF from the Naples Zoo on a breeding recommendation from the SSP or Species Survival Plan! She has been genetically matched with our male Collared Lemur Olivier and the two are already fast friends! Happy Birthday Flo! We are so glad you're here! #collaredlemur #eulemurcollaris #birthdays #SSP #AZA #LCF
A third spacious new bungalow has just been comple A third spacious new bungalow has just been completed at Camp Marojejia (Camp 2) of Marojejy NP, one of the only locations where wild silky sifakas can be observed. Tourism has increased in Marojejy in the past 2 years partly due to the many new bungalows, toilets, and dining areas built by LCF over the last 5 years. Ecotourism is one of the primary goals of the Lemur Action Plan. At Marojejy, each visiting tourist or researcher is supported by many local guides, cooks, and porters who earn substantial salaries. Photo of the replaced old bungalow is displayed as well as the new bungalow pics.

Each year, LCF visits several silky sifaka sites i Each year, LCF visits several silky sifaka sites in Marojejy, Anjanaharibe-Sud, and Makira, as part of our long-term monitoring program for this rare, flagship species. We have established individual recognition for all individuals in these groups, and monitor changing group composition and local threats. Our team just returned from Marojejy Camp 2 where the group now contains 1 Adult Male named LFV, 1 adult female VSC, 1 subadult male LMT, and 1 juvenile female HMT. A subadult male MBV, is no longer part of the group and presumably dispersed. Sadly, the infant born in this group in July, died in August after the mother and infant fell to the ground from the canopy after a dead tree broke. The mother landed on the infant, gravely injuring the infant, who died a short time after.
